If you are not aware, Maine has just about everything you can think of for recreation.

I came up with the idea of writing things tourist can do while in York County Maine, while I was driving across the country. When on a road trip, I have noticed that we always focus on just getting from point A to point b, that when we get there, we have no idea what we are going to do while visiting. This Hidden Gem in Southern Maine is the Perfect Place to Get Away

One of my new favorite places to bring my dog, beer, and a fishing pole. If that doesn’t sound like a good time to you, then just consider staying home.

DEERING POND

There are three Trailheads to this pond.. one is short, and two are fairly long. The deciding factor on this should be, what do you enjoy more, walking in the woods, or sitting by the pond.

The Long Trail: the trail is also known as ‘The Rail Trail’. You are driving up Main Street in Springvale( route 109), and you just took a turn onto Oak Street, also known as Rt 11A. After driving on Oak Street for about a 4th of a mile, there will be a small pull-off on your right with a large metal gate. Park your car here, make sure not to park in front of the Atv path going around the gate. If you do park in front of the Atv path, just prepare yourself to be walking home…

Short Trail: Also known as ‘DAN’S PREFERRED TRAIL’ can be found on hanson ridge rd. Imagine that you are driving on Rt11a headed out of Springvale, you will see a flashing yellow light, take a right at the light. The road you are now on is Hanson Ridge Rd. Continue on Hanson Ridge for about a mile, you will come to a large hill in the road, at the bottom is the parking area on your right. The pond is only a few minutes walk from here.

On the other side of the road is another metal gate with a trail continuing.. honestly not worth following on foot.
There is a pretty neat trail that goes around Deering Pond. The trail follows the waters’ edge at the perfect distance where you have the shore bushes, and the large pines surrounding you.

When I first discovered the pond, I found a Geocache… but since then I have not seen it, might still be out there. There are a total of 16 geocaches located in the general area of the pond.

Also a good area to find some wildlife as seen below!

By the way, on the map above, you see a place called Emily’s WoodFired Pizza, the best pizza I have ever had. My Favorite is the spinach and bacon, and no I do not work there, nor’ am I associated with anyone who does.
